Aii-Hwa (May) Lee

I hail from Burma, and the Theravada Buddhist tradition.  When I was about 20 years old, my grand-aunt instructed me in Maharmitta, a unique form of Buddhist meditation perfected by Ashin Zanékabiwuntha, an eminent monk and meditator whom our family revered.  Unlike some forms of meditation, Maharmitta has nothing to do with religion; it focuses solely on relaxing one’s mind and body.

The first time I tried Maharmitta, my body started to relax and I felt calm come over me after a mere three minutes.  Since then I have been a life-long student, and with time I learned to master the relaxation of my entire body.

Maharmitta has become an integral part of my daily routine, helping me concentrate throughout the day and providing me a deeper and more restful sleep at night.   Moreover, it has been instrumental in helping me navigate through difficult times in my life.  When I emigrated from Burma in 1983 to resettle in the U.S., leaving all that was dear to me—family, friends and home—and adapting to a radically different cultural, circumstances and a new job in an unfamiliar field took an emotional toll on me.  The regular practice of Maharmitta helped me navigate these difficulties, blessing me with emotional balance and the relief of stress.  Meditation has helped me medically, as well.  In 2004, I had a car accident (someone ran a red light and hit us).  I sustained head and back injuries, and short- term memory loss.  Through meditation, I was able to pinpoint my pain, aiding in my physical recovery, alleviating both my physical pain and short-term memory loss.

Over the years, I have shared the gift of Maharmitta meditation with many of my friends, helping them to remain relaxed and focused in confronting and overcoming life’s challenges.  I would now love to share this special gift with you.

"Over the past year, at the Mary’s House (Assisted Living) in Rockville, Maryland, I have been teaching the residents “Slow Movements and Stretching” to relax and warm up the body.   Most recently, I have also started to do the same with the monks and lay persons at the International Buddhist Center in Wheaton, Maryland."
